BSA Supports Law Enforcement in Megaupload Case

On June 15, 2023, two former executives of Megaupload, an online platform that facilitated the distribution and access of massive amounts of infringing content, including software products of several BSA members, were each sentenced to approximately two and a half years in prison by the High Court of New Zealand. This sentence sends a clear message regarding the protection of intellectual property rights online and was made possible in part thanks to BSA’s support and the participation of multiple BSA members. These two defendants were sentenced after pleading guilty and agreeing to testify against Megaupload’s former CEO Kim Dotcom. Proceedings related to the extradition of Dotcom to the United States for criminal prosecution are ongoing.
