Strong Result for Member in Japan

The Compliance Solutions team successfully closed a multi-member case in Japan involving a manufacturing company’s unlicensed use of high-value member software. After a successful evidence preservation action (conducted pursuant to strict BSA safety guidelines) and several months of negotiations, the case resulted in the purchase of nearly USD$200K in member software. Because of some unique aspects of Japanese law, it is not always possible to negotiate a settlement in which the infringing company commits to purchasing the products that were being used improperly, making this case a significant breakthrough result for BSA’s program in Japan and setting a valuable precedent for all members.
